A 33-year-old man was yesterday arrested at Nakuru’s Level-Five Hospital for allegedly posing as a medical doctor at the facility.
George Mburu Mugereki, who has been masquerading as Dr Johnarius Njuguna, was arrested after he failed to properly identify himself when asked to do so by the clinical officer-in-charge Joseph Kiprotich.

The suspect, who was fully dressed like a medical practitioner complete with a white coat and a stethoscope on his shoulders was carrying out “normal” duties at the out-patient section when he was arrested.

Unqualified doctors

Upon questioning, he claimed he was a volunteer and a community health worker. “We have a procedure for taking interns and volunteers and we are not aware of this man’s presence here,” said Kiprotich.

Patients at the hospital have been complaining of seemingly unqualified doctors attending to them at the casualty department, claims that forced the hospital administration to launch investigations.  “There have been complaints from patients that some doctors were collecting blood samples and other tests outside the consultation rooms which are against our policy,” he said.

It is alleged that a “gang of fraudsters” has been extorting money from unsuspecting patients as fee for their service.

“Some P3-forms and other medical documents have been brought to us with our rubber stamp but the named doctors are not known to us and as such, people have had their cases dismissed by courts,” Kiprotich added.

Mburu confessed to have operated in the hospital for a week but denied extorting money from patients. He said he has been reporting to the hospital every morning and working until noon. He also confessed to have worked the same capacity in a Kitale hospital without being caught.

“Anybody asking for money or performing consultations outside the consultation rooms is not part of us and should be reported immediately. All transactions must be invoiced,” said Kiprotich. The suspect was taken to Nakuru Central police station.
