President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday appointed Fatumah Ahmed as the first ever female Brigadier in the latest posting, promotions and appointments of officers in the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). Fatumah, will also serve as the Defence Forces Medical Insurance Scheme managing director.
No woman has ever held the Brigadier position at the KDF. She is among 14 officers promoted at KDF with 11 of them being elevated to the rank of Brigadier. Fatumah was enlisted in KDF in 1983 under the Women Service Cops, before she was commissioned to the rank of second Lieutenant in 1985 and posted to the Kenya Air Force.
She has previously served as battalion second in command, staff officer 11 Audit Personnel and records, Staff Officer 1 personnel and administration, and Colonel Personnel at the Kenya Air Force headquarters.
She is a graduate of the National Defence College, one of the military centres of excellence, which is an affiliate of the University of Nairobi’s Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies. She also holds a diploma in management from Strathmore University.
Brigadier Levi Franklin Mghalu was promoted to the rank of a Major General and appointed the Kenya Navy Commander, replacing Major General Ngewa Mukala, who moves to Defence Staff College as the Commandant while Major General George Mayamba Owino will now be the Kenya Military Academy Commandant.
Ministry of Defense Head of Communications, Bogita Ongeri said the changes have been made on the advice of the Defence Council, chaired by Defence Cabinet secretary Raychelle Omamo.
“Following the afore listed postings, promotions and appointments, it is noteworthy to highlight that the Kenya Defence Forces now has the First female Brigadier – Brigadier Fatumah Ahmed, promoted to Brigadier and appointed Managing Director Defence Forces Medical Insurance Scheme,” read the statement.
The changes have also seen Colonel Godfrey Aumah Peter Buluma appointed the Chief of Operations, Plans and Training at the Kenya Army headquarter and has also been promoted to Brigadier.
