Embattled Neno Evangelism Centre’s Bishop James Maina Ng’ang’a could appear in court any time from today if the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) approves the recommendation by the police to charge him with causing death through dangerous driving.

The Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet forwarded to DPP Keriako Tobiko’s office the file on Pastor Ng’ang’a recommending that he be charged with the traffic crime.

The report, which was compiled by the Traffic Commandant Charlton Muriithi, after Boinnet directed him to, following a public outcry over suspected cover-up, was handed to Tobiko yesterday morning.

Boinnet’s decision to order for a probe was prompted by protests and claims by witnesses that they had seen Ng’ang’a alight from the driver’s seat of one of the accident vehicles at the scene before he boarded another car and left.

Also in Muriithi’s probe team were his deputy Julius Wanjohi and Central traffic boss Samuel Bore. More than 15 people, among them, witnesses at the scene, police officers from Tigoni Police Station who visited the scene and Ng’ang’a himself were questioned by the team that was tasked to investigate the matter.

Boinnet told People Daily that it is now up to the DPP to either agree with their recommendations or reject them and return the file for fresh investigations.

“We made various recommendations on the pastor and the man who claims to have been driving the car at the time of the accident, and it is now upon the DPP to decide on the way forward,” Boinnet told the People Daily on the phone.

And the seven officers, who handled the case, have not been spared either as the report also recommends that a disciplinary action be taken against them. The report says the Muriithi team found direct evidence linking the pastor with the accident. The officers used circumstantial evidence to conclude Ng’ang’a was at the scene of the accident.

According to the report, the pastor is said to have left a meeting in Naivasha for Nairobi at about 4pm. The accident happened at about one and half hours later. Police in Tigoni have already charged Kuria over the head-on collision incident.

But witnesses, including some who have recorded statements with the police insist that the pastor was the one driving the vehicle at the time of the accident, allegations he denies. The witnesses said they saw Ng’ang’a alight from the Range Rover and jumped into another car that arrived soon after the accident and sped off.

Kuria is said to have showed up the following day and presented himself as the man who was behind the wheels at the time of the accident. Last Friday, Kuria was almost beaten up by an angry crowd outside the Limuru law courts when he turned up for the mention of the case as they questioned why he had allowed himself “to be used by Ng’ang’a as a decoy.”

The accident involving a Range Rover and a saloon car occurred at Manguo area in Limuru. Police investigations have shown the Range Rover belonged to a motor vehicle dealer and was on sale. Police have questioned Pastor Ng’ang’a twice and confiscated his mobile phone for analysis.

And on Sunday, a remorseless Ng’ang’a led his congregation in prayer exorcising demons, which he claimed had allegedly attacked his church members and directing them to journalists who have been haunting him. “Go get into the heads of those journalists writing bad things about me and my church,” he said in prayer.

The boisterous preacher went into the length of chastising all individuals, particularly journalists writing and talking negative stories about him and warned that they would “soon die” before accomplishing their ill intentions against him.
