The parliamentary committee on Lands has started a probe on individuals behind the alleged grabbing of huge chunks of land at 15,000-acre Solio ranch in Nyeri. Led by their chairman Mburi Muiru, the committee visited the scheme where part of the land is reportedly under cultivation by some influential people.

Muiru said they will summon Lands ministry officials to establish whether any land was grabbed and by who adding that part of the ranch owned by an American family had reverted to the State after their lease expired.

Kieni MP Kanini Kega claimed some individuals benefited from allocation of the land at the expense of genuine squatters in his constituency who are still living on the roadside.

The legislator, who paraded some of the squatters mainly from Kakuret village in Kieni East, said it was wrong for them to have been left out during the initial allocation of the land and urged the committee to ensure they have benefited.

The government bought 15,000 acres in 2010 to resettle squatters who were living in colonial villages and on road sides in Mathira, Tetu, Othaya and Nyeri town. However, querries have emerged about those who actually got allocations with politicians accused of being beneficiaries.
