The more than Sh300 billion Urban Renewal and Re-development of old housing project by Nairobi City County government has been postponed.

According to a dispatch from the county government, the ground-breaking ceremony was to be held three months ago but has been pushed to June because of logistical factors.

City Hall was set to bring down old estates owned by the county in Nairobi and put up highrise buildings in their place to accommodate more people.

The new units are to be constructed in Pangani, Starehe and Parklands in a concept known as regeneration, where old houses are demolished to give way to new construction.

County executive for Urban Renewal and Housing Tom Odongo said the project will see over 12,000 housing units built to accommodate more than 100,000 people. Odongo said residents currently occupying the old 17,000 housing units built by the defunct City Council of Nairobi would be given first priority.

First phase

“We would like to, once again, re-assure current residents that they will be able to buy or rent a new unit when they are built at a concessionary rate,” said Odongo.

The first phase of the redevelopment project will be through Old and New Ngara, Pangani, Jeevanjee/ Bachelors, Ngong Road Inspectorate staff quarters, Uhuru and Suna Road.

Other ageing estates targeted are Bahati, Mbotela, Ziwani, Makongeni, Kaloleni, Jericho and Shauri Moyo, which will be demolished and redeveloped to accommodate more tenants.

“Tenants and business people residing within these estates have been consulted through several public participation forums and assured that the County Government has their interest at heart,” said Governor Evans Kidero.

Existing tenants will be allocated new units for purchase through the Tenant Purchase Scheme while new buyers will purchase through outright purchase or mortgage system, he said.
