Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) closed its campuses in Kigali, Rwanda and Arusha, Tanzania because they have been making losses, vice chancellor Mabel Imbuga has revealed.

Speaking when she appeared before the Adan Keynan-led Public Investments Committee last week, the VC said in the last three years, the campuses have incurred a loss of more than Sh100 million collectively.

Imbuga told the committee that the director in charge of Kigali campus, Anthony Luvanda, swindled the university cash under the guise of purchasing land for expansion.

The director also secured a Sh30 million loan from the I&M Bank in Kigali without the university council’s approval, but the money was not accounted for. Consequently, the VC said, the campus is under investigations by Rwandese authorities.

Imbuga was, however, at pains to explain to Kimani Ichung’wa (Kikuyu) why the university opted to invest in foreign countries instead of improving the existing facilities in Kenya. JKUAT spent Sh10 million as seed capital for Arusha centre and Sh21 million for Kigali campus. Ends.
