The leafy plant khat, otherwise known as ‘miraa’ has been the source of livelihood for thousands of farmers in Meru and Embu counties for many decades. The United Kingdom and Netherlands were the biggest export markets for miraa with weekly exports of 20 tonnes valued at 1.4 million shillings.
However, things took a turn for the worse two years ago after the British and Dutch governments imposed a ban on miraa prompting the Jubilee administration to create a 1B shilling fund to cushion farmers from shocks of the export ban.
