Retired President Mwai Kibaki has called for more investment in the water sector to effectively manage the scarce resource and realise its full benefits. He urged key players in the sector to devote more resources — especially in science and technology — in the provision of water, saying it will go along way in enhancing the way the commodity is managed.

Speaking at Safari Park Hotel during the launch of World Water Development Report, he said water has direct bearing to creation of decent jobs and sustainable development. The theme of the 2016 World Water Development Report is; ‘Water and Jobs’.

Water and Irrigation Cabinet secretary Eugene Wamalwa said the government has put in place comprehensive policies, strategies and plans to ensure that water resources are properly managed in spite of challenges bedeviling the sector.

He added that for the country to ensure adequate water provision for the citizens relying on surface water sources was not sustainable hence the need to fully explore ground water sources. Unesco Eastern Africa Regional Director, Mohammed Djelid reiterated his organisations’ commitment to ensuring Kenya tackles challenges in the water sector.

He said water plays a critical role in many sectors of the economy. For that reason, Djelid said more investment is required in managing the scarce water resources available for the benefit of all citizen.
