The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has dismissed a directive by Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) secretary general Wilson Sossion asking school heads and teachers to not to sign performance contracts.
The teachers’ employer maintained the exercise will lead to improved learning outcomes, provision of support in professional development for teachers as well as enhance better teacher performance competencies.
In a statement to newsrooms signed by the communications director Kihumba Kamotho, TSC said the exercise is anchored in the TSC Act 2012 to monitor performance of teachers, adding that the exercise has been replicated in other public sectors.
“The secretary general or another person for that matter cannot purport to direct principals, head teachers and teachers on performance of duty as these are employees of TSC, not Knut. They are only answerable to their employer,” he said.
Kamotho said more than 90 per cent of the 28, 000 principals and head teachers in public schools have signed the contracts, and warned Sossion (pictured) to refrain from the matter. and warned Sossion (pictured) to refrain from the matter.
