Opposition Cord dewhipped Nyamira Senator Kennedy Mong’are yesterday shortly after he floored his Kakamega counterpart Boni Khalwale in a contest for the chairman of the powerful Senate Public Accounts and Investments Committee.
Last evening Senate Minority Chief Whip Johnstone muthama wrote to the Speaker Ekwee Ethuro informing him that Mong’are had been replaced in the committee by Agnes Zani (Nominated). During the poll, Khalwale, who has held the post since the committee was constituted, garnered only three votes while Mong’are got six.
West Pokot Senator John Lonyangapuo was elected vice chairperson to replace his Mombasa counterpart Hassan Omar, who has held the position since 2013. The committee has 11 members, but only nine were present and voted.
Speaking after his election, Mong’are pledged to work with Khalwale to ensure all the pending work is concluded before the 2017 General Election. “For the last two years, this committee has worked harmoniously and what has happened today is just change of guard. We will work with the former chair to ensure devolution succeeds,” he said.
On his part, Khalwale assured the incoming chair of his support, saying he will do everything possible to ensure the committee succeeds in its endeavours.
“We should not involve any ill-feelings on this. This was a change of guard...I will support the new chairman and help whenever possible,” he said. The committee oversees how the 47 counties use allocated funds and audit their investment and is reconstituted every year.
