Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi has withdrawn key amendments to the report on the crisis facing sugar industry, which, if adopted, would have had far-reaching effects on Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero.
The amendments would see legal action taken against all managing directors and heads of transport, commercial, finance, national sales (sugar) and procurement, who served in the Mumias Sugar Company board between 2011 and 2014 for losses incurred by the firm.
However, the same amendments were later reinstated by Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wa, who will table them when debate on the report comes up on Tuesday next week.
Earlier, the move by Wandayi (pictured) had been received with protest from members led by Leader of Majority Aden Duale, who challenged Wandayi to explain whether he had been compromised by forces in the sugar industry.
According to Duale there is no justification for Wandayi to withdraw the amendments which have been in the Order Paper since October.
The withdraw immediately saw debate on the report, which was tabled in March last year, postponed for the third time to allow members time to table other amendments as well as allow committee members currently visiting the Galana Kulalu Irrigation Scheme to return.
