President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered Interior Cabinet secretary Joseph Nkaissery to reactivate the war against drug and arrest barons in the Coast region.

At the same time, the President said he will not spare anyone protecting drug dealers and barons in the country. The Head of State said that the fight against the menace in the region is yet to bear fruit because of complacence by police and local administrators.

Uhuru, who was speaking during a question and answer forum with more than 600 youths at State House, Mombasa, asked police to stop arresting drug users and instead focus on suppressing supply by arresting the barons. “A lot of Kenyans are disappointed that the fight against drugs here has not succeeded. It is a big challenge and enough has not been done,” he said.

He said arrest of drug users was a waste of time because this would not in any way cut the supply chain.  During the forum, youth Badi Mwalimu Mohamed from Jomvu constituency wanted to know why drug barons were walking scot free despite an earlier order by the President to crack down on them.

Mwalimu, who is a visually impaired student at the University of Nairobi, said little success had been achieved in the war against the menace.

On insecurity, the President urged Kenyans to work closely with security agencies to identify criminal elements among them. He said the youth to quite complaining and instead work closely with the government to find solutions to problems facing the nation.

“Let us not be a nation that keeps on complaining and instead offer solutions so that we can move forward,” he said. The President said drug rehabilitation centres will be built in Mombasa and Lamu.

Uhuru said his government was making progress in tackling some of the problems facing the Coast region among them issues of land and unemployment.

The youths, drawn from the six counties of Coast region were addressed by Cabinet secretaries Nkaissery, Cecily Kariuki (Gender), Najib Balala (Tourism) and Fred Matiang’i (Education).
