Deputy President William Ruto has told school heads to stop charging fees beyond what is  specified in government guidelines.

He said the Education ministry will take action against those who defy the fees guidelines. Speaking in Kilifi,  Ruto, said the government was catering for part of the school fees hence there was no need to charge parents more. This follows complaints by residents to the Deputy President over the levying of extra fees by schools.

Ruto said the government had increased capitation for secondary schools in addition to scrapping exam fees for both standard eight and form four pupils. “The government has set aside funds for every child in public schools so parents should not be burdened with extra fees,” he said.

Ruto asked the Education ministry to investigate cases where head teachers are forcing parents to pay extra fees. “Parents should no longer pay exam fees for students sitting for class Eight or Form Four exam,”  he said.

He also decried the high number of school dropouts in Kilifi because of early child marriages and urged the locals to embrace education to lift the fortunes of the region.

He added that the government has set aside Sh1.8 billion to construct 60 Technical Training Institutes at constituency level  countrywide.
