A total 23 counties out of 47 had more girls than boys sitting their 2015 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, as it emerged less new female candidates were registered this year.
However, Education Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i indicated a decline in the percentage of female candidates being registered for their class eight exam. “While in the last five years we have applauded the consistent percentage in number of girls which has been higher than boys, this year we have witnessed a tilt in this trend,” he said.
Registered boys The results reflected a paradigm shift with the percentage increase in the number of boys hitting 5.56 per cent, higher than girls’ at 5.18 per cent. Figuratively, the number of boys who sat their exam increased by 22, 657 from 437, 228 last year to 459, 885 this year, reflecting a 5.18 per cent jump.
Comparatively, boys increased by 24, 646 from 443, 258 last year to 467, 904 this years, recording 5.56 per cent increase. Matiang’i said analysis of candidature trends by county shows that there are some counties where the gender disparity in favour of boys is still very high. Counties that recorded notable gender disparity in 2015 KCPE included Mandera, Garissa, Turkana, Wajir, and Samburu counties.
